When Sarah Jarosz performed new songs from her upcoming release Undercurrent at SXSW in March, it was the first test of the album—would the songs, performed solo by Jarosz, with her guitar or octave mandolin, stand on their own? Undercurrent is different from her previous records. While her three earlier albums built on her reputation as an instrumentalist who could also sing and write, Undercurrent places the focus on the all-original songs and her performance accentuating the growth and maturity Jarosz, now 25, has achieved since graduating from New England Conservatory and moving to New York. Tuesdaynight’s sold-out concert at Union Chapel in London – one of many sold out shows along the tour – showcased that maturity.

While the focus of 2016 was primarily on touring as a trio with Jedd Hughes and Jeff Picker, Jarosz found time for other important collaborations—joining Garrison Keillor on a two-week A Prairie Home Companion Alaska tour, and performing a duet with Keillor at his final broadcast as the host of APHCat Los Angeles’  Hollywood Bowl. She also joined her bandmates in I’m With Her — Sara Watkins and Aoife O’Donovan — at a few special events, including the upcoming  benefit, “Tribute to the Music of Linda Ronstadt” for the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, slated for December 11 in Los Angeles. She and collaborator Parker Millsap took a break from the Americana Music Festival in September to do the Luck Mansion Sessions, during which Third Man Records and the mansion’s hosts, Luck Reunion, paired various musicians together to film and record two songs. You can get a sneak preview of those recordings – due out in 2017 – here.

Another highlight of 2016 was joining Chris Thile, the new host of A Prairie Home Companion, as a member of the First Call Radio Players band. Thile also invited I’m With Her to perform at American Acoustic, a special weekend at the Kennedy Center that he curated and hosted.

Jarosz also recently premiered the acoustic video for “Green Lights” with UK publication The Line of Best Fit. Shot in the Berkeley Hills, the video features Jarosz’s trio. Watch it here.

Jarosz’s tour dates for Undercurrent will extend into 2017, and will include a trip to the UK in January/February, as well as numerous dates throughout the US.
