Life is Beautiful Festival is pleased to announce the addition of Pussy Riot’s Nadya Tolokonnikova and Masha Alekhina to its 2014 Learning program. The women received international attention after being imprisoned for two years in their home country of Russia, following a performance in 2012. After their release in December of last year, both Nadya and Masha have been on a mission to raise awareness for those who have been deprived of liberty in camps and prisons around the world. Joining the speaker lineup on Friday, October 24th, the founding members of the feminist punk art collective will discuss their experiences and efforts related to their incarceration, their music, feminism, LGBT rights, anti-authoritarianism and their foundation Zona Prova (Zone of Rights).

“Nadya and Masha’s treatment in Russian prisons and labor camps was inhumane. They were deprived, starved and held captive,” said Lisa Shufro, Learning Series Curator for Life is Beautiful. “They are coming to the festival to share their perspectives on justice, injustice, activism and civil right not only in Russia, but in the US and the world.
Newly expanded to include over 40 individual influencers and visionaries representing a wide variety of perspectives and topics-including legendary Las Vegas headliners, Penn & Teller; Co-founder and CEO of the Malala Fund, Shiza Shahid; Irish mixed martial artist, Conor McGregor; and consumer products icon, Andy Grignon-all Learning sessions will take place inside the Western Hotel at 899 Fremont Street.
