After blanketing the tail-end of last year with a handful of gorgeous and melodic layers on The Forest EP, Johanna Cranitch (aka Johanna & The Dusty Floor) is scheduled to deliver a proper introduction this June alongside her debut album, Northern Lights on Red Valise Records.
Born in Australia and criss-crossing the globe before ultimately settling down to ivory keys and EST in various parts of New York City, Johanna’s voice evokes the confidence of a six AM sun first breaking over a city’s most Eastern-resting high rise. Having studied jazz at the Australian Institute of Music for years, her wide-ranging vocals and lush piano arrangements are delivered confidently throughout the entirety of Northern Lights; drifting effortlessly atop scenes dealing with distress, demise, and moderate yet passionate lust. Her sometimes brief, sometimes large allusions to both Kate Bush and St. Vincent were all over 2010‘s The Forest EP, causing many ears to stand at attention.
Before the album drops this coming summer, get a chance to see this rising talent when Johanna & The Dusty Floor takes up a month-long residency at Pete’s Candy Store in Brooklyn. It’s happening Tuesdays at 9PM during all of March.
Johanna and the Dusty Floor’s Northern Lights will blow in hard come summer’s start, a stellar breeze of dreamy piano and monumental strings leaving your floor, be it bedroom or dimly-let subterranean club or otherwise, anything but dusty.
