Today, Larry Campbell & Teresa Williams have released their second studio album, ‘Contraband Love’ on Red House Records. Produced by Campbell, the 11 track album has earned praise from Relix, who called the record “rife with joyousness,” and American Songwriter, who hailed the couple’s ability to “create a unique sound inspired by the past that is spirited, stirring and timeless.” Larry and Teresa will celebrate the album’s release with a special performance at Nashville’s 3rd & Lindsley tonight, as part of the annual AmericanaFest.
‘Contraband Love’ is the follow up to Larry and Teresa’s 2015 self-titled debut, and represents a leap forward for the duo as they dive even more deeply into their shared pool of musical and life experience. ‘Contraband’ features adventurous songwriting, powerful new interpretations of their blues and gospel influences, sterling musicianship and some achingly vulnerable vocals by Teresa and Larry as they tackle emotionally stormy themes of love and betrayal.
Along with the eight tracks penned by Campbell, ‘Contraband Love’ also includes covers of the 1923 tune “My Sweetie Went Away,” popularized by Bessie Smith and the Carl Perkins classic “Turn Around,” featuring Levon Helm’s drumming captured shortly before his passing. The duo worked closely with Helm for seven years – Campbell as bandleader and producer (for which he won three Grammys), and Williams as singer. Other special guests on the album include Little Feat’s Bill Payne and another former member of Helm’s band (current bassist for The Lumineers), Byron Isaacs.
Larry and Teresa will embark on a US fall tour with Shawn Colvin starting September 30 at the Moore Theatre in Seattle, WA. Full itinerary below.
