About “What I’m Doing Here,” Rachael Price said:
“What I’m Doing Here is a song dedicated to my favorite soul singers, Sam Cooke, Otis Redding, and Aretha Franklin. For me, no one can express heartache and love like these singers and we wanted to record a song that hearkened back to these amazing era of music.”
About the b-side “Wedding Band,” upright bass player Bridget Kearney said:
“Wedding Band is a fun little song intended as a public service announcement reminding married people how helpful it is when they wear their f*%king wedding bands–a simple and clear way to indicate that they are spoken for. Being out on the road as much as we are, you meet a lot of people. And it’s helpful to know which ones of those people are married and which ones are not, for various reasons!
The recording of this song is all about the singing. Its just vocals, piano, and percussion, (with a classic first-take McDuck trumpet solo for the ages!) The four of us sang around one mic in the studio, and the piano track was actually pounded out by McDuck and I simultaneously, sharing the piano bench of the old parlor upright at Great North Sound Society. We tried to capture the energy of a singalong. And this is a song with a message anyone could relate to and sing along with: “wear your wedding band, people!””
The band recently performed their song “You Go Down Smooth” on Ellen, which you can watch HERE. “You Go Down Smooth” is one of the songs from Lake Street Dive’s recently released album Bad Self Portraits, which debuted at #18 on Billboard and has found the band achieving widespread acclaim, with Rolling Stone calling them “the year’s best new band.” Their performance on Ellen followed recent performances by the band on The Colbert Report andLate Show With David Letterman.
