Acclaimed Self-Titled Debut Album Out Now Via Fat Possum
Buffalo Nichols’ NPR Music Tiny Desk (Home) Concert debuted online this morning, showcasing three tracks—“Living Hell,” “Lost & Lonesome,” and “These Things”—off his acclaimed self-titled debut album. Released last October via Fat Possum, the LP has seen glowing coverage from Rolling Stone (‘The Fight to Reclaim the Blues’ feature), NPR Music’s All Songs Considered (‘Best of October’), Texas Monthly, Acoustic Guitar, Austin Chronicle, Bandcamp Daily, Guitar World, The Bluegrass Situation, No Depression, Premier Guitar (‘Hooked’ series), Popmatters, Uncut (UK), Mojo (UK), and more. He is also featured on John Paul Jones’ re-working of “When The Levee Breaks,” produced by Sebastian Robertson and Mark Johnson for Playing For A Change’s Song Around The World initiative and released last Friday.
Nichols, who wrapped up a month-long U.S. tour supporting Houndmouth last weekend, heads back out on the road next month for a run of headline dates as well as stops at festivals including Savannah Stopover. He is also confirmed to support Valerie June in May; a current itinerary is below.
Since his earliest infatuations with guitar, Nichols—raised in Milwaukee, WI, and currently based in Austin, TX—has asked himself the same question: How can I bring the blues of the past into the future? After cutting his teeth between a Baptist church and bars in Milwaukee, it was a globetrotting trip through West Africa and Europe during a creative down period that began to reveal the answer.
“Part of my intent, making myself more comfortable with this release, is putting more Black stories into the genres of folk and blues,” Nichols explains. “Listening to this record, I want more Black people to hear themselves in this music that is truly theirs.” That desire is embodied in his self-titled debut album, composed largely of demos and studio sessions recorded between Wisconsin and Texas.
