Genre-bending Americana/folk-rock band Driftwood have announced their new album, Tree Of Shade, set to be released April 5. The band’s first single, “Lay Like You Do,” will be released February 22, and they have also announced new tour dates throughout the Midwest and West Coast in support of the new single and album. Additional tour dates on the East Coast will be announced shortly, including album release shows in the band’s native upstate New York.
“This was one of those songs that came out faster than I could write it down and seemed sort of like plucking an apple off a tree,” songwriter and guitarist Dan Forsyth says of “Lay Like You Do.” “The melody and chorus came out of a dream and when I woke up, I wrote the rest, real fast.”
With a sound that’s influenced by equal parts past and present, the band blends folk influences along with ’60s R&B, ’70s country rock, and contemporary pop to create a foot-stomping fervor that’s made them a favorite at festivals and dance halls alike. For their fifth studio album, due out in Spring 2019, Driftwood retreated to the Catskill Mountains, spending ten days working with Simone Felice, the award-winning producer of the Lumineers’ Cleopatra, and sound engineer Pete Hanlon, whose many credits include work with O.A.R. and Rachael Yamagata. The resulting eleven tracks on Tree of Shade showcase an evolution in the band’s sound, shying away from their usual barn-burners in favor of mellower, more contemplative songs.
Formed by childhood friends Dan Forsyth (guitar) and Joe Kollar (banjo/guitar), Driftwood is currently based in Binghamton, NY. Driftwood’s first album, Rally Day, introduced their sound as a duo before gradually expanding to their current five-piece line-up, including violinist Claire Byrne, who shares songwriting duties and lead vocals with Forsyth and Kollar, upright bassist/background vocalist Joey Acuri and the newest member, drummer Will Sigel. The band have averaged 150 shows per year in support of their previous albums (the aforementioned Rally Day, Driftwood, Live at GrassRoots, City Lights, Driftwood LIVE at The Purple Fiddle) and performed alongside Bela Fleck, Old Crow Medicine Show, Rusted Root, Del McCoury, Brett Dennen, The Wailers, Railroad Earth, Robert Randolph, Rubblebucket, Leon Russell, Emmylou Harris and Donna the Buffalo, just to name a few.
Driftwood will be touring throughout 2019 in support of Tree of Shade.
