Robert Randolph’s new record, ‘Got Soul’ has been nominated for the GRAMMY’s Best Contemporary Blues Album. The nomination will be the renowned pedal steel guitarist, vocalist and songwriter’s fifth, following his nominations for Best R&B Performance By A Duo/Vocal Group (“Higher Ground”) and Best Traditional R&B Vocal Performance (“You Are So Beautiful”) in 2009 and 2006, respectively, and two 2003 nominations for Best Rock Instrumental Performance (“Squeeze”) and Best Rock Gospel Album (‘Unclassified’).
‘Got Soul’ is a kinetic, raucously energetic collection, that brings Randolph’s pedal steel guitar-playing to center stage and bears deep influences from funk, soul, blues, jazz, and gospel.
Randolph says the record takes stock of his past as a church musician in New Jersey even as it pushes the band forward into new places. “The music takes me back into the roots of who I am, where I came from,” Randolph reflects. “It’s got an upbeat, positive church/gospel/rock/bluesy vibe to it. I’m like a rock and roll preacher on Got Soul.”
Often called the “Jimi Hendrix of the pedal steel guitar,” and named one of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time by Rolling Stone Magazine’s David Fricke, Randolph has revolutionized the role of the instrument in contemporary music.
