Third Man Records is excited to share their slate of vinyl releases for Record Store Day Black Friday, which takes place this Friday, November 24. These releases include U2’s limited edition “The Blackout” 12″ single, Sun Records reissues from Carl Perkins (“Blue Suede Shoes” b/w “Honey, Don’t!”), Johnny Powers (“With Your Love, With Your Kiss” b/w “Be Mine, All Mine”) and Earl Peterson (“Boogie Blues” b/w “In The Dark”), and three live recordings from the label’s famed Blue Room (featuring sets from Pile, Boris, and Earth).
U2’s “The Blackout” 12″ single will be available on colored vinyl at Third Man storefronts (as well as two TBA retailers in the UK and Ireland) and black vinyl elsewhere. The Sun Records reissues will be available on “sun ray” vinyl at Third Man storefronts and black vinyl elsewhere, while the three live records will be available in black vinyl. More information on these releases can be found below.
Third Man Records will also debut their Beats Solo3 Wireless Third Man Records Limited Edition Headphones, a collaboration announced last week, on Record Store Day Black Friday, as well as new holiday merchandise, available both online and at their Nashville and Detroit storefronts.
U2’s “The Blackout” 12″ single
“The Blackout” marks the first physical release from U2’s eagerly awaited new album, SONGS OF EXPERIENCE, due later this year. The 12″ includes both the original album version backed by an exclusive remix by the band’s longtime collaborator, Jacknife Lee. Hailed by Rolling Stone as “a dynamic new track,” “The Blackout” was revealed this summer via a surprise live video, filmed during U2’s blockbuster Joshua Tree Tour 2017.
TMR’s “The Blackout” 12″ had just one extremely limited pressing at Third Man Pressing, the label’s state-of-the-art vinyl production facility in Detroit. Black vinyl editions will be available at all participating Record Store Day shops, with 750 colored vinyl editions on offer exclusively at Third Man Records’ Nashville and Detroit storefronts, as well as two TBA retailers in the UK and Ireland.
Sun Records reissues:
In 1952 a record label started in a bustling Tennessee town. They were fond of acoustic tile, storefronts, the color yellow, the owner producing recording sessions and music that generally moved people. Their output couldn’t be pigeonholed to any one genre. They released everything… country, rock and roll, gospel, bluegrass, rockabilly, blues. Sixty-one years later, Third Man Records, in a similarly-bustling Tennessee town and believing in many of the same ideas mentioned above, entered into partnership with the legendary Sun Records to reissue titles from their catalog on the format they were best known… 45rpm 7″ singles.
For Record Store Day Black Friday, Third Man has the distinct pleasure of reissuing three classic singles from the Sun catalog — Carl Perkins’ “Blue Suede Shoes” b/w “Honey, Don’t!”; Johnny Powers’ “With Your Love, With Your Kiss” b/w “Be Mine, All Mine”; and Earl Peterson’s “Boogie Blues” b/w “In The Dark.” While most Sun Records artists were from from the South, both Johnny Powers and Earl Peterson fittingly hailed from Michigan. These singles bring Third Man’s Sun Records reissue catalog, which also includes hits from Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley, Roy Orbison, and Jerry Lee Lewis, to a total of thirteen. Black vinyl will be available at record stores everywhere, and Third Man’s signature “Sun Ray” limited edition colored vinyl will be for sale only at Third Man Records Nashville and Detroit storefronts. Pile: Live At Third Man Records
Prominent members of the Boston music scene and post-rock specialists, Pile began as the brainchild (and solo project) of Rick Maguire in 2007. This live LP was recorded on April 16, 2017, right after the release of their acclaimed new LP A Hairshirt Of Purpose, capturing them at a distinctly creative peak and unparalleled energy. This record is somehow chilling and explosive – to say nothing of a surprise Blonde Redhead cover. It stands shoulder to shoulder with the rest of their catalog and will no doubt remain a shining example of Third Man’s live series for years to come.
Boris & Earth: Live At Third Man Records
Japanese experimental metal greats Boris and Washingtonian drone metal stalwarts Earth shared a bill in the Blue Room on August 1, 2016, and each band’s set will get its own vinyl release for Record Store Day BlackFriday. These two bone-rattling sets, recorded live to tape, exemplify the magic that only the Blue Room can provide.
