The Joy Formidable release a brand new digital EP called ‘Sleep Is Day’. The is the first all acoustic EP the band have shared despite a career busy with acoustic performance and album gems like “Silent Treatment” and “The Brook”.
Singer Ritzy Bryan explains “we had some beautiful live recordings of tracks from ‘Hitch’ that we’d done acoustically, I think they were the building blocks of this EP. Then things got dangerous when we started dabbling with a few covers.”
‘Sleep Is Day’ pays ode to David Bowie, the Misfits reunion and TJF’s current tour buddies, the South African four piece KONGOS.
Currently touring together in North America and Canada until late October, Ritzy hints that early next year could bring an acoustic tour. “We’re planning on taking a show on the road that’s very intimate and features some great guest performers.”
A track on the EP has also inspired a charity project through Pledge launching on October 3rd with all profits being donated to SOS, the Sumatran Orangutan Society – http://www.orangutans-sos.org. Says Ritzy, “We read a tweet by the naturalist and conservationist Bill Oddie. He was lamenting the destruction of the lianas in the orangutans’ natural habitat. We have a song on our EP called “Liana” and once we started reading about the crisis the orangutan was facing, it set the wheels in motion for us wanting to raise some money.” Several items are to be sold by the band, including artwork, merchandise and one of Ritzy’s Fender guitars. The accompanying video for “Liana” takes you on a journey through tropical rainforests and all its inhabitants. It reminds us how we are all connected, how the “forest of the world is but a mirror reflection of what we are doing to ourselves and to one another.”
