Electrifying. Soulful. Compelling. These three words exemplify the sound of the new lead singer of Tower of Power, “Memphis Soul Man” Marcus Scott.

As a young boy, Scott would sit with his ears glued to the radio, mimicking every sound he heard. This fascination evolved into an insatiable desire to entertain and capture the hearts of audiences everywhere. His musical journey started in 2005 as a hit in local Memphis talent shows, and he quickly became known as the “go to” singer for all of the major gigs in Memphis. Larry Dodson of the legendary Bar-Kays gave him a call to collaborate on “House Party,” he has sung with James Ingram and appeared at Isaac Hayes’ night club and he’s been the lead singer of the NBA’s Memphis Grizzlies’ house band. Now, he’s stepped into the lead singer role of Tower of Power.

“Singing with Tower of Power is simply a dream come true, and it fits me like a glove,” said Scott. “I have always been known as a ‘soul man,’ but Tower of Power has me singing Soul with a capital S.”

President Obama once again shared his summer picks via a Spotify playlist—an eclectic mix of hand-selected tracks on two lists that takes listeners from day to night. The vacation playlists include Tower of Power’s “So Very Hard to Go,” the second single from the group’s eponymous third album, on the nighttime playlist. Also featured are legendary songs from Prince and Aretha Franklin, some more recent tracks from hip hop artists like Common and Chance the Rapper and the musical styles of Manu Chao and Caetano Veloso.
