Friends, hunting buddies and bluegrass all-stars got together last month as “The Kowike Creek All-Star Bluegrass Band” for Bluegrass for Babies, in what’s becoming an annual tradition to benefit The Children’s Hospital at Midtown Medical Center in Columbus, Ga.

“The Kowike Creek All-Star Bluegrass Band” was comprised of Woody Platt of the Steep Canyon Rangers on guitar; Rob McCoury from the Del McCoury Band on banjo; Jason Carter on fiddle, also from the Del McCoury Band; Barry Bales on bass, of Allison Krauss and Union Station and Daren Shumaker on mandolin, known for his performances with Blue Dogs and Ronnie Bowman. These pickers joined forces to present a first class evening of bluegrass music on January 15 at the Rivermill Event Centre.

This year’s event drew tremendous support and grossed over $63,000 for the Children’s Hospital at Columbus Regional Health which boasts the region’s only advanced maternity services and neonatal intensive care unit, dedicated pediatric service and pediatric intensive care unit, trauma center and highly regarded emergency services for children and adults.

The Columbus Regional Health Foundation expressed the following message of gratitude: “’The Kowike Creek All-Star Bluegrass Band’ just blew us away! The band graciously volunteered to be the featured entertainment at a children’s hospital fundraising event for us, and their performance is still the talk around town. People who didn’t have a chance to attend have heard how amazing the band was and say they already can’t wait for next year. The band is a joy to work with and listen to. Our toes are still tapping and our lips are still humming their bluegrass tunes.”

Bluegrass for Babies was a tremendous opportunity for these musicians to join forces for such a great cause. Woody Platt expressed the following sentiment about the evening: “Playing with this group of musicians was so much fun! Being able to have the chance to perform with guys from other groups that you normally don’t get to see and pick with was such a treat. Not only did we have a great time and a fabulous quail hunting trip in Columbus, Ga. — we were also able to join our forces and raise money for a great cause. it was such a ‘win win’ for everyone!”
