Today, legendary soul singer Lionel Richie announces that Dumpstaphunk will join several dates on his “All Hits All Night Long” 2013 fall tour, pairing the Grammy-winner’s classic pop songs with the dirtiest funk New Orleans has to offer.
Dumpstaphunk will perform new music from their July 2013 release Dirty Word, supporting Richie coast to coast at concerts inBrooklyn, NY (Barclay’s Center), Atlanta, GA (Chastain Park Ampitheater), Houston, TX (Woodlands Pavilion), San Jose, CA (HP Pavillion) and Hollywood, CA (Hollywood Bowl).
A decade evolved from their debut at 2003’s New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, the heavy-hitting ensemble features Ivan Neville,Ian Neville, Tony Hall, Nick Daniels III and Nikki Glaspie. With two bass players, four-part vocal harmonies and a notorious live swagger, Dumpstaphunk will offer fans an infectious groove unseen since trailblazers like Sly & the Family Stone and Parliament Funkadelic.
Richie is not the only star supporting the modern funk movement — folk singer Ani DiFranco and Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppersboth appear on the band’s new record, along with their New Orleans friends and family such as Trombone Shorty, Rebirth Brass Band and Art “Poppa Funk” Neville [founding member of the city’s pioneering funk band, the Meters, Art is the father of Dumpstaphunk guitarist Ian Neville and uncle to keyboardist Ivan Neville, son of Neville Brothers frontman Aaron Neville].
Dirty Word has earned universal praise since its July 2013 release — “I don’t expect to hear anything funkier this year,” New York Times — while debuting at #4 on the Billboard Blues chart and currently holding down the #2 spot on the Jambands radio chart.
Dumpstaphunk plans to release their first-ever music video for Dirty Word‘s “Dancin’ To the Truth” when they return from a string of Australian tour dates leading into their west-coast run with Richie in October.
