Distinguished folk singer/songwriter Phil Cody today announces the release of Cody Sings Zevon, an album that honors the late Warren Zevon, whom he toured with in the 90s. “In the summer of 2013, adrift personally and professionally, uninspired to do much songwriting of my own, badly in need of a lighthouse, I turned to my old friend and mentor, Warren Zevon, for inspiration, motivation and the guiding light to lead me back to shore,” says Phil Cody. Cody Sings Zevon is now streaming on Elmore Magazine and available to purchase on iTunes, Amazon and BandCamp.

The 12-track album includes stripped down versions of Zevon’s songs, pulled from all albums throughout his career. Cody Sings Zevon marks Phil Cody’s fifth full-length album, including his 1994 cassette-only self-release, The Cool Buffalo, and three albums recorded under Interscope Records, who he signed with in 1995. This album also marks Cody’s return to the scene; a full-length studio album of original material is expected to release next year.

In 1994, Phil Cody met Warren Zevon when he took the supporting slot on the second half of Zevon’s solo US tour. “We met that first night in Nebraska. I played a version of the old traditional ballad ‘Shenandoah,’ which he complemented me on,” says Cody. “That tour ended with Warren inviting me to join him on a late night visit to Hunter S. Thompson’s Owl Farm after a gig at the Wheeler Opera House in Aspen – we were blown away!” After signing with Interscope Records and releasing his Sons of Intemperancealbum in 1995, Cody hopped on tour with Zevon again for his winter and spring tours. “We played everywhere on this tour, and I mean everywhere! Warren could do that; drop anchor every couple hundred miles or less and fill the room, everything from bars to night clubs to small theaters. We played eight or nine shows just in Florida alone! We were a small group on that tour and got to know each other very well.”

Shortly after Zevon passed, Cody was interviewed and subsequently quoted multiple times in what remains the legendary songwriter’s definitive biography, “I’ll Sleep When I’m Dead: The Dirty Life and Times of Warren Zevon,” written by ex-wife Crystal Zevon. “It’s an honor that snippets of my brief yet intimate time with him were deemed worthy of inclusion,” says Cody.

Phil Cody will celebrate the release of Cody Sings Zevon will a free, all ages performance in Los Angeles on Sunday, November 23rd at the Crescent Hotel from 4:00-6:00pm(403 N. Crescent Drive, Beverly Hills 90210). He’ll perform with his full band featuring Steve McCormick (guitar) and Eduardo Tancredi (drums). Additionally, Phil will be the support act for Marc Cohn on select tour dates in January 2015.
